Fantasy fiction and fantasy writing - an insider's view on A Spell For Eternity
Creative Mind

glimpses from within a moment of creativity
© Greg Hamerton

I’m in the zone, even though writing is slow. Speed doesn’t seem to be a function of connectivity. Maybe inspiration affects the speed, but first the channel must be open, and here it is. It’s like being able to look into the liquid air a little distance in front of my eyes (although it is seen in the mind, in another plane, but somewhere similar to that place about half a metre ahead of my forehead). And more than that sight, it’s the ability to see the pictures forming upon that shifting liquid air, and to be able to almost coax that substance to form, that’s what is critical.

Once I’m focused on that place, once I’ve brought my attention to that position, then I can see what flickers upon its almost-tangible surfaces. I have very little control over what I see, because it is seeing not thinking, but I feel there is some room for invention in there because it is governed by imagination. I am forming some kind of clay, it’s not merely seeing, but it’s not making either, it’s somewhere between the two.

I'm excited as I write today’s scene out. Is it really good, or does it only feel that way? I can’t tell, but can’t really believe it is anything but good. It feels so vital and real under my fingers. That’s where the scene is forming, under my fingers, as if I’m touching that etheric substance with every keystroke, the keyboard is forgotten, dissolved, allowing me to touch the ideas directly ...
