Riddler's Gift
FIRST
TALE OF THE LIFESONG
The latest
fantasy novel by author Greg Hamerton |
The
Riddler's Gift is about a young woman whose life is
changed by the talent she
discovers within herself. It is about music that resonated in our
blood, a song which might still linger there. It is about reaching for
power, and the choices one has to face.
In a time when the world was ravaged by chaos, one kingdom remains;
ordered, isolated, protected. Then Tabitha Serannon awakens an ancient
power and the world begins to change.
She is hunted for her talent. The Shadowcasters whisper in her ears as
their evil closes around her. Soon the Riddler walks beside her, but is
he on her side? She has a moment to learn the magic before she loses
her grasp of the Lifesong, but the path she must follow leads into
Darkness; into terror, treachery and desire.
To survive she must give voice to a music that she hardly understands,
an enchantment that will echo through all time.

It
was a lot of fun to perform the book out loud. It's not as simple as
you'd think, because each character has to speak with their own voice.
I pushed myself to my limit with dramatising the story properly. The
Darkmaster was especially painful since he has a hoarse, mobster type
voice. The Riddler was great fun. The Cosmologer was a scream.

Wow! What a whirlwind year so far. Producing and filming The Journey
took a lot longer than anticipated, so writing has been slow. I've also
moved to the UK to develop a larger readership as a British fantasy
author. Now I'm based in London, and have been working hard on getting
the book into the UK stores, a necessary step for survival.
Although the book has sold more than three times the average for
fantasy in South Africa (thanks, my loyal readers!) in the last year,
this equates to about one month's salary (peanuts).

Since the publishing work has cooled off now, I've found the
time to write again. What a pleasure! The sequel to The Riddler's Gift
is going in leaps and bounds. It's a complex plot and much harder than
Gift to write, since it spans centuries of Oldenworld history and many
people. Since the author's credo is 'raise the bar', Tabitha ends up in
a lot of trouble. Especially since she's been pitted against Ametheus
(the heart of Chaos) and he tends to do things he shouldn't be able to
do, which tangle my plot-threads up worse than a skriggly cat.

I popped into my local Exclusive Books (Constantia) this morning, and
was delighted to find The Riddler's Gift on the top shelf in the
Fantasy section, books displayed cover out! At last, I'm on the shelf with Robin Hobb and the others in my favourite store.

The book was successfully launched at the Cape Town Book
Fair. I gave a talk on 'The Real Magic of Fantasy
Writing' and a short reading which was well-received. Thanks to the
many visitors who joined me and especially to those who walked
away with signed copies of The Riddler's Gift. The book is now
available for R130 plus shipping
(worldwide). Roll-out to the retail bookstores begins in
July.
