I've
watched many paragliding DVDs, and I'm always breathless with
anticipation when I slide them into the player and press > .
We're going flying!
On the first pass, I just let it all wash over me - the great visuals, the altitude, the awesome piloting.
Performance Flying is a visual feast, with some excellent camera work
and creative angles. Having worked on a few productions myself, I know
how much work it is to produce even the simplest sequence of moves, and
trying to film while giving instructional dialogue and performing the
moves at the same time is more frustrating than trying to untangle a
knotted winch-line with your hands tied behind your back.
The disappointment with most instructional DVDs is that being pitched
for the broadest possible market, they are designed for the
intermediate pilots, which means that most beginners can find something
useful in the content, but experienced pilots are left feeling somewhat
let down. With all the promises of 'this will improve your flying'
we're left thinking that there wasn't anything new, and that we could
have made the DVD ourselves.
Not so with 'Performance Flying'. It is an advanced pilot's delight.
Using the Ozone Team pilots to get the real expert advice, this DVD
takes you through the most difficult and downright insane acro moves
available. Asymmetric Spirals, SATs, Tumbles, Helicopters, all narrated
in such calm voices that you'll know they are all certifiably nuts.
There's some absolute poetic imagery, shot in slow motion and in black
and white, of a tumble going wrong. Oh, how he dives through the air
like a flying fish. Oh, how he falls into the glider. Oh, how beautiful
his reserve parachute. Chills down the spine, they've managed to
give acro flying a Gothic edge.
Man, this DVD made me want to go out and perfect my flying! It is inspiring, beautiful to watch and downright addictive.
It's well worth the retail price - you can get it from Jocky's Site or from Cross Country
magazine. Whatever you do, be an original - respect copyright. Don't
burn some dodgy copy on your PC. We want Jocky to earn as much as
possible from this production, so he can make us another one. Please,
Mr Sanderson, can you make us Alpine Flying - understanding the Alps?
