Fantasy fiction and fantasy writing - an insider's view on A Spell For Eternity
Love on the page

on writing a love scene
© Greg Hamerton

The feeling of intoxication writing this love scene between Tabitha and Garyll ... exquisite. I feel excited, I am so awake, my feet are bouncing on the floor, can’t keep still, can’t stop. I don’t even want to really write this aside, I fear it will steal juice from the main scene, but I also know this is a rare moment and I want you to know how it feels.

I was feeling this high yesterday when I had to stop writing due to appointments and this morning I sat in the cold dark rain for two hours, remembering that I had enjoyed the scene so much the day before, but not able to find the reality.

I began to wonder if Garyll and Tabitha actually DID make love at this point in the story. Was it the best place for it? Wouldn’t it be better to keep such a climax until later in the book? Structure, order, planning, plot.

But the whole essence of what they are doing is HIGHJACKING the plot. They slipped off together, when the author didn’t intend them to, didn’t even want them to, and now they are blowing all the limits off with their lovemaking. It’s a beautiful scene, it has so much creativity in it, how can I ignore it? I have to surrender to their love, just as they are doing. They tried to stop, but they couldn’t. So who am I to interfere, it seems I have no rights here.

There is a sense of amazement, fascination and excited awe at what the two lovers are actually doing on the page. Oh my God. They are doing it, right there in front of me and my readers, how can they be so brave and reckless?.
